Synopsis

High pressure aloft remains the dominant, weather influencer in the West (nothing unusual in mid-summer). All the computer models predict a continuation of this pattern through the end of the month (likely well into August). The challenge (for me) is interpreting (accurately) the minor day to day changes in the low level, wind flow pattern (affecting southern California). While my last forecast (last week) was finally “in the ball park”, my forecast numbers (for UCLA) were still a bit on the high side.

I’m confident on continued warmer than normal weather for most of the Southland (chance that beaches may have seasonable temperatures on some days). Some “monsoon” moisture aloft is rolling through the Southland today (reason for increased cloud cover this afternoon). Radar showed some embedded, light showers within the loose cloud mass (probably nothing worse than some sprinkles as the air mass beneath the clouds is relatively dry). I didn’t include any shower threat in the local forecast as it should fade by the time it reaches the Westside. Based on today’s model consensus, no significant “monsoon” incursion in the Southland is forecast for the rest of the week. Of course, I’ve repeatedly said that small errors in predicted wind flow can result in a notable change in weather outcome.

Thanks in part to warmer than normal ocean temperatures, muggier than usual weather is likely to remain for some time in the coastal plain (some coastal valleys too when surface on-shore flow carries ocean air far enough inland). The models maintain a shallow marine layer through the week. The marine layer may be diluted at times, but its presence in elevated humidity should promote variable mugginess for at least this week. If a unforeseen, relevant, “monsoon” incursion occurs, then it’ll feel worse.

There will be no available forecast next week. So, the next issued forecast/synopsis should be on Monday, 3 August.
