Synopsis

After a few days of upper level troughing along the West Coast (reason for recent, mild for August weather), high pressure aloft has expanded into the Southwest again. The center of high pressure should get no closer than northern Arizona (by midweek), but it should get strong enough to promote much warmer than normal weather for well inland areas (at least, for a few days). Warmer than normal weather should develop near the coast, but depending on how defined a shallow marine layer remains, the departure from normal may not be significant (took middle of the road approach with this week’s campus forecast). Some minor cooling is anticipated next week when high pressure aloft should weaken slightly and drift east a bit.

Last Tuesday, an unforeseen disturbance (by me) helped trigger brief, light showers in parts of the L.A. Basin (“Monsoon” thunderstorms stayed in the mountain/desert region of southern California). Minimal atmospheric instability is predicted for the next few days, but a modest uptick in moisture/instability is possible late in the week. My forecast shows nothing more than varying amounts of mid/high clouds, but small errors in predicted wind flow can result in noticeably different, weather outcomes.

Looking farther out in time, a new, upper level trough may form along the West Coast toward the end of the month. This predicted trough looks to be weaker than the one of late last week. However, seasonable to slightly cooler than normal weather would develop (all of the Southland). A number of model solutions also favor occasional, “monsoon” showers and thunderstorms (mainly applicable to mountain/desert region. We’ll see.

Next issued forecast/synopsis should be on Monday, 24 August.
