Abstract:

The contribution of aviation to climate change is outlined, covering CO2 emissions and aviation-specific non-CO2 effects. Regarding the latter, aircraft-induced clouds (AIC, man-made ice clouds composed of persistent contrails and contrail cirrus) are currently thought to cause the largest radiative forcing. AIC will therefore be discussed in greater detail and the presentation will also address options to reduce aviation’s climate impact.
