{"id":38,"date":"2020-09-04T21:24:26","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T21:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nike.atmos.ucla.edu\/henry\/?page_id=38"},"modified":"2025-05-07T21:36:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T21:36:59","slug":"links","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/links\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My research is broadly about natural (geophysical and astrophysical) fluid dynamics, especially in the ocean and the climate. &nbsp;It encompasses theory, computational simulation and data analysis for theory and model testing (validation). &nbsp;Frequent subjects are the general circulation and its natural variability; mesoscale eddy processes; the surface turbulent boundary layer and how it is influenced by surface gravity waves; and, more recently, submesoscale currents (10 meters to 10 kilometers) in the upper ocean, above the bottom topography and near the shoreline. &nbsp;In addition, through collaborations, various problems in oceanic biogeochemical elemental cycles and ecosystems are addressed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Realistic computational oceanic circulation and coastal simulations are made by our research group and other external collaborators, using the Regional Oceanic Modeling System (ROMS) code. &nbsp;ROMS is both a prototype for developing better simulation capability and a means of investigating oceanic phenomena and processes. &nbsp;Many oceanic phenomena are emergent in inhomogeneous, non-stationary turbulent flows with complex surface forcing and domain geometry,&nbsp;<em>e.g<\/em>., unstable surface fronts and separating boundary currents. &nbsp;Realistic simulation capability enables discoveries and explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any given time there is a wide range of specific projects matching my own interests with those of other researchers, students, and visitors to the research group, as well as with various collaborators (see Publications). &nbsp;Some of them are associated with community projects and sponsoring agencies, which currently include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large Eddy Simulations of Langmuir turbulence in the oceanic surface layer (ONR);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface wave-current interaction in the inner shelf zone (NSF, ONR);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Southwest Pacific submesoscale currents (NASA);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Submesoscale, shelf, and littoral circulation in the Gulf of Mexico (Consortium for Advanced Research on Transport of Hydrocarbon in the Environment, CARTHE, (CARTHE and British Petroleum);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hypoxia and acidification off the west coast of North America (California Ocean Protection Council and NOAA); and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coastal modeling for the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS NOAA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/research.atmos.ucla.edu\/roms\/ROMS_coastal_modeling.html\">http:\/\/research.atmos.ucla.edu\/roms\/ROMS_coastal_modeling.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My research is broadly about natural (geophysical and astrophysical) fluid dynamics, especially in the ocean and the climate. &nbsp;It encompasses theory, computational simulation and data analysis for theory and model testing (validation). &nbsp;Frequent subjects are the general circulation and its natural variability; mesoscale eddy processes; the surface turbulent boundary layer and how it is influenced&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-38","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/38","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=38"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/38\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":434,"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/38\/revisions\/434"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/atmos.ucla.edu\/jcm\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=38"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
