The utility of the linear response functions in atmospheric dynamics is illustrated with two examples. In the first example, the linear response functions are used to elucidate the dynamics of convectively coupled equatorial waves and convective self-aggregation. Extensions to include memory in convection and to nonlinear waves, as well as implications to machine learning of convective parameterization, will be discussed. In the second example, we will use the linear response functions to set up precise numerical experiments to study a number of issues in jet dynamics.
