Inez Fung (UC Berkeley) - Carbon-Weather Data Assimilation

We present a “top-down” approach for estimating carbon dioxide emissions from the atmospheric CO2 variations. Satellite and insitu CO2 observations together with raw weather observations are assimilated into CAM5 using the Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filter (EAKF) from NCAR's Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART).   In this way, surface sources and sinks of CO2 can be inferred as that required for mass conservation.   An OSSE explores the observing strategy needed to cross-check a country's reported emissions.
