Application – How to Apply
Below are step-by-step instructions guiding you through the application process. Please follow these instructions carefully.
Thank you for your interest in the UCLA Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. The deadline to submit your completed application for Fall 2023 admission is December 10, 2022. We will consider your entire application package holistically in making the admissions decisions, including personal accomplishments, letters of recommendation, personal statements, academic records, test scores and supplemental materials. Your application cannot be evaluated until it is complete. * Financial support may be awarded by the Department at the time of admissions recommendation. Notifications of admission and support will be sent beginning in late-February 2023.

The following documentation is required and must be submitted before your application can be reviewed.
1. Application for Graduate Admission (Part A)
Submit a Graduate Admissions Application online from the Graduate Division website AND a non-refundable application fee ($135 for US citizens and Permanent Residents, $155.00 for all other applicants).
In addition to the application fee, please complete the following required forms on-line:
a. Supplementary Information (including basic information, biographical data, citizenship and residency, plans for graduate studies, and academic history)
b. Statement of Purpose
c. Personal Statement
d. Three Letters of Recommendation
e. Transcripts
You may upload your transcripts HOWEVER, they will be considered unofficial transcripts. You will need to send OFFICIAL Transcript(s) of all college/university work completed are required. If transcripts are not in English, an authorized, complete, and exact English translation must also be provided. Mailing address can be found below. Submission of official transcripts is only required if admitted to the program. Official final transcripts must be submitted as either:
A. e-transcripts sent directly to us; have your institution’s Registrar’s Office send e-transcripts to: dlopez@atmos.ucla.edu
B. paper transcripts in the official sealed, not-opened envelope and mailed to us. Mailing address can be found below.
f. CV / resume
g. Fellowship application (if you wish to be considered for merit-based financial support). For US citizens and Permanent Residents – this process is separate from the need-based financial support through FAFSA.
2. General test GRE scores
Students who wish to apply for admission to our graduate program for the 2023-2024 academic year are not required to take the GRE or submit a GRE score report as part of their application package. However, students may voluntarily submit GRE test scores and they will be reviewed as part of the holistic application consideration. The applications with GRE scores will not be given greater weight than those that do not include scores.

Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score report from the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is required.
3. TOEFL scores (International applicants only)

Official TOEFL scores report from the ETS is required for international applicants who have not received a degree from an institution in which English is the language of instruction and/or whose first language is not English. Although an official copy from ETS is required, submitting a photocopy is recommended. There are often delays in receiving the ETS copy of this record.
4. Evidence of Conferral of Degree(s)
This may be in the form of a certified copy of a diploma or a notation on the transcript which indicates that the degree has been awarded. Documents not in English must be accompanied by an authorized, complete, and exact English translation.

NOTES
If you have not taken the TOEFL (if applicable), you should take it as soon as possible. Official scores received after the application deadline will delay your application evaluation. UCLA discourages the awarding of duplicate degrees and does not defer admissions. Applications for students interested in applying for Winter or Spring quarters will be considered on a case by case basis for admission only and will not be considered for departmental financial support.
